Since September 1981, the School of Mix has offered the most cutting edge, complete and affordable bartending courses in Western Canada.
School of Mix has a highly trained staff of professional bartenders, with years of experience in the hospitality industry. Our bartending school is committed to providing a thorough, hands-on training program, using an actual bar, and bar equipment, in a realistic bartending atmosphere.
Bartending is a exciting and monetary rewarding profession. Our students are uniquely qualified for immediate employment, and use their "Serving It Right" certification as an advantage over others applying for the same positions available at many bars, lounges, night clubs, hotels and restaurants. Tyler Hazelwood:
As a former graduate of the Mix School of Bartending at age 19, Tyler originaly became a Bartender as a means to support his love for travelling.
He has since travelled and worked as a Bartender in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, London, Amsterdam, Turkey, and Greece.
Tyler along with a handful of other Mix graduates worked their way across Canada on a five star hotel on wheels called the America Orient Express. Now back in Canada pursuing a career in film, t.v. and music, he has worked in numerous bars and clubs as a bartender and promotions such as Section (3), Tokyo Lounge, and Voda.
At age 23 Tyler started a company called TNT Professional Bartending Service, that provided graduates of the Mix School of Bartending with employment.
Now working as the director of the Mix School of Bartending, Tyler partnered up with DJ Leanne have reworked the concept of the School to include their love for music and now offers DJ Lessons and has now become The School of Mix. Tyler says his goal was to create an actual hands-on working environment as much as possible.
 Dan Hawkins : Dan started his restaurant career in 1998 as a chef with the Keg Steakhouse and Bar, opening the Park Royal Location in West Vancouver. After two years leading the kitchen team he moved into a bartending role. Dan then became part of the Cactus Club on Broadway and Granville, moving through the ranks from server/bartender to shift leader. Dan was offered an opportunity to open Relish the Restaurant with manager Jason Sohor and he was involved with all aspects of development from the beginning. Dan was brought in by Executive Chef Aaron Salter to manage MiBar and Grill in the Marriott Hotel and he was responsible for re inventing the entire cocktail and wine menu, and the complete re structure of restaurant practices. From the Marriott Dan moved on to participate in the opening of Saltlik Steakhouse on Alberni street as a restaurant manager. Dan has also been a local DJ for several years in Vancouver and had the fortune of working in Ibiza Spain for the Privilege Club one summer, and also traveled through Australia as a DJ. Dan fine-tuned his music producing skills after graduating from Columbia Academy with a recording arts diploma in 2004. Dan opened Figmint Restaurant with the consulting company The Fifteen Group in 2006 as the bar manager and was involved in all aspects of the bar program from design to cocktail creation. Dan created what was coined a “culinary“ cocktail program in that it incorporated molecular mixology as well as severl in house infusion recipes that remain cutting edge still today. From Figmint Dan took over the General Manager position with acclaimed chef Jeff Van Geest‘s Aurora Bistro on Main Street. He was involved with the over all operations of the restaurant as well as working closley with local wineries to build a celebrated wine program. From Aurora Dan is joining The School of Mix and brings with him a decade of restaurant, bar, and DJ expirience to aid in the instruction of classes.
Matt Sherlock - Wine Expert / Tasting Host:
Matthew Sherlock has been deeply involved in the wine industry for 7 years. He has worked in the restaurant industry as a bar manager, assistant sommelier, sommelier, restaurant manager and restaurant owner. He has completed two vintages in wineries, one in New Zealand and one here in the Okanagan and he now manages one of Vancouver’s premium wine stores. He has completed his Advanced Certificate from the UK based Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) and continues to taste, travel and learn in order to stay on top of all that is changing in the world of wine. Ryan Steele: Ryan Steele is a local actor and bartender who joined the teaching team at the School of Mix early in 2005. He attended the MIX school as a student in the summer of 2000 and has gone on to apply his knowledge in many different atmospheres.
Along with Tyler, Ryan bartended on North America’s only private luxury train, The American Orient Express. He currently bartends at 1181 and the Biltomore Caberet. He also bartends private functions with TNT Bartending. Ryan is a cancer survivor and organizes a yearly fundraiser called, The Ball. Ryan and his friends have raised thousands of dollars in the past couple years for the Canadian Cancer Society. Ryan’s acting career is also in full swing. He currently has numerous commercials on air and has just booked his first prime time television role. Ryan is very happy to work at MIX bartending and hopes to make the environment a great place to be for all our students.
